Life lessons from running a half-marathon

1. Don’t procrastinate. Just do it if you want to do something.

2. You may face unexpected obstacles along your journey. Take a detour/ another route and you will be fine.

3. While life is often compared to a marathon race, sometimes you can take a step back and run your own “race” at your own pace and enjoy your own unique journey.

4. Self care is important and you are the best person to take care of yourself. Exercise, celebrate your small wins or do whatever to give yourself a pat on your back.

……….

Woke up at 5.30am today to attempt my first ever half marathon. Signed up for the Army Half Marathon virtual run 2 months ago on a whim. I thought why not challenge myself? Today, a part of my usual route in the park was closed off due to renovation. Disrupted my rhythm initially but I quickly took a detour to bypass that area.

There is a common phrase: “Life’s a marathon”. It is quite apt as life can indeed be a long journey and we never quite know what to expect along the way. Due to Covid, we now have virtual races, which I thought are quite refreshing. You pick your own route and run at your own pace. It is a little like life isn’t it? You don’t always have to jostle with everyone in a crowded competitive race and you do it at your own terms and enjoy your own learning journey. Doesn’t matter whether you follow the route that others take or whether you run faster/slower than others.

Anyway, now that I checked this off the to-do list, I shall reward myself with a Magnum tonight. Need to celebrate small wins with simple pleasures. Self-care is important, right? 🙂
